Nearly every list I’ve seen has the 2004 USC team as either #1 or #2. I personally see them as the best college football team I’ve ever seem take the field, although I was too young to see the 1972 team.

Most lists that I’ve seen also show the 2001 Miami team in one of the top two spots.

Among all the teams I personally witnessed, I have to say 1995 Nebraska is the most impressive. They beat everyone by at least 2 TD's and routed Florida 62-24 in the final game.

2004 USC, however, had several close calls: 31-28 vs Stanford, 23-17 vs Cal, 28-20 come-from-behind vs Oregon State, and 29-24 vs UCLA. The most dominant game they played, of course, was the 55-19 rout of Oklahoma.

For my money, the 72 team was the best, period! That 71 Nebraska team was great, but SC was more talented

Ratings like this tend to favor the candidates which more voters remember. But for its time, our 1972 team really was about as good as any college team ever got. Except against our strongest opponents, who could put up a fight for two quarters or so, most of the games were almost boring (sorry, but we get spoiled) because they were so one-sided.

The 2004 team, great though it was, squeaked by Stanford (3 pts.) and squeaked by UCLA (4 pts.). There was stress for our fans.

The 1972 team pretty much obliterated everybody. It only beat Stanford by 9 (it was a yawner and not that close) and everyone else by double digits. No real stress in any contest by the end of the third quarter. The 2004 team was fabulous, but the 1972 team was like a perfect storm. As evidence of the '72 team's talent level, remember that Anthony Davis began the season as our third-string tailback!

The 1972 team had ridiculous talent. Rod McNeil was the high school 120 hh champ and Allen Carter was the state 100 yard champ and neither really ever saw the field. I could be wrong but Edesel Garrison was the countries best high school 440 runner?

The 78 Trojans with Marcus Allen Ronnie Lott Anthony Munoz Charles White Keith Van Horne Brad Budde and Dennis Smith among others was probably one of the most talented teams ever if you base on NFL careers as well . However they didn’t have quite the same results as some of the other teams. Amazing that you have two of the best to ever play their position in Anthony Munoz and Ronnie Lott on the same team along with Marcus Allen and other NFL All Pros. If our center was not injured we probably beat Arizona State and go undefeated and people are talking more about that team. We beat number one Alabama in Birmingham.
