Well, I’ve had stars for previous teachers turn into duds for me and vice versa.
We are dealing with developing players who are not just developing physically but mentally and emotionally as well. There is a difference between a 18 year olds and 19 year olds. I was different at 19 than I was at 18.
I think the number and softness of practice is playing a HUGE part in this. I know it’s played a big part in my level of support for Helton. As it has been said, you play like you practice.

Thank you for another great article Kevin. Every expert is complaining about the lack of hard practices, but our HC stubbornly refuses to change. It will be his undoing if it continues.

Kevin, what do you think of the PI call on Biggie's interception? Seemed like a very bad call.

Each week your posts are pretty much the same thing and yet we see no changes from the coaches. Pretty soon you can just cut and paste from your prior week. Redundancy falling on deaf ears. Thanks for trying though!

Our offense and defense is so predictable. We are exposed by good teams even a team like Zona. I just don't get it! So frustrating being a Trojan fan these days.

Hoping they bring KB in as a defensive consultant during the bye week.

What makes me nutty is that this D is fairly obvious to diagnose. OC's adjust and we see the result. We seem incapable of adjusting on the fly and are simply content to run the same schemes looking for better results.
A complete change in philosophy is needed on the D side .... and some might say on the O side as well. We don't seem to let our playmakers on the D side go. Such as we have any.
I'm looking at some upcoming games and getting ready to cringe. Buffs / Domers / Cal / Utah will feast on this D. Sad to say.

When you have players saying a win feels like a loss..... Well what else needs to be said.

The message has clearly delivered by many. Helton is running the team his way. Period. So this either produces championships or it doesn’t. I know what’s been successful in the past.

I can only say that this is how Helton wants the team to practice. He believes it will produce the best results. I disagree.

I’ve commented on Udeze as a coach. That opinion I’ve kept to my self. Last week I pointed out how losing Austin Clark to another program. Our DL results haven’t progressed uniformly. I do see an improved physical play. We’ll need it.

Actually if we added some true line stunts with an occasional “odd” set (cover the center) we really help ourselves and freak out the opposing O-line.

The PI call on his pick was nonsense and should have never been called. This PAC-12 crew was center stage which is the typical crap we get from this conference. Earlier games were anomalous when the teams played e.g. PI against Stanford or even WSU.

While I agree there is concern about practices having enough impact on performance, some of the changes from past seasons is the current rules for what they can do, or not.

    Inseason practice recommendations
Inseason is defined as the period between six days prior to the first regular-season game and the final regular-season game or conference championship game (for participating institutions). In any given week:

    • Three days of practice should be non-contact/minimal contact.
    • One day of live contact/tackling should be allowed.
    • One day of live contact/thud should be allowed.
    Difference from the 2014 guidelines:

    1. Recommendation to no longer allow two live contact/tackling days per week.
    2. Non-contactminimal contact recommendations have been added.

Thanks Kevin for reenforcing this aspect. You've emphasized the importance of this before. Clancy and Udeze have big, quick, agile, athletic, and powerful men up front who can also run well. They can easily implement and execute effective line stunts but it ain't gonna happen unless they start doing them in practice and in games. They should be a center's worst nightmare - disrupt and upset the center and it disrupts the offense. Why in the world would they allow the other half of the brains of the offense stay cozy? It makes zero sense! Kick his butt!
