There’s talking the talk and walking the walk, but this defensive staff that USC has put together is absolutely going to get after it on the recruiting trail.

There is clearly going to be a comfort level going into Texas with Orlando, Naivar, Harrell, Jinks and Baker, but USC really needs to quickly find better results there. Can’t go another recruiting cycle just getting guys to visit in the summer and then watching them commit to Texas and SEC schools.

Williams, Colbert and So’oto are going to get the attention of plenty of Southern California prospects.

I’m interested to see if they try to grab an impact commitment quickly to try to continue building momentum.

Chris Claiborne would make that Southern California crew extremely solid in recruiting

I'm shocked by how solid this new coaching staff looks. Quite impressive! I never expected to be saying that about USC football this February.

I know throwing a bunch of offers out there doesn’t mean anything by itself, but does anyone else get the sense that SC has almost overnight made itself feel a little more worth a look-see for recruits than it did 2-3 weeks ago?
If one decently high-profile kid jumps on board with this new crew then others might start to reconsider their plans.

Well, I know it’s not much, but it is making my decision to renew my season tix easier to accept.

    This!

Everything always SOUNDS good, then we get on the field and...
If we can’t produce on the field, the coaching staff isn’t going to matter.
Wins and upside is what is going to turn this program around.

I will reserve the right to judge this situation after we are 8-10 games into the season in 2020.

I'm actually impressed with how they assembled this defensive staff to be honest. IDK who to give kudos to but I'm happy that it's done. Hopefully they are able to improve the on field status of our team.

If we can just improve basic tackling skills and positioning, USC will be that much further improved.....

    Question for any/ALL (Erik? Greg?)...

What's the situation with CClaiborne that hasn't put in on a STAFF already? Yes, I too would love to see his NAME on the Staff pages, but, is there a reason he isn't already EMPOLYED (by any DI program)...seems curious to me...

    Thanks!

    Fight On, FOREVER, Fight On!

My read from Claiborne is that he wants to be at USC. I don't think he's just looking for any coaching position anywhere.

If he wants to be at SC why don't they just add him as GA. Having his name on the list of coaches would bring alot of excitement and credibility to the program. You add in that parents saw what he did at SC parents can talk to their kids about this.

Absolutely. The basics were that bad last year, and possibly even worse on special teams.

If he's accepted into a graduate program and he's willing to enroll, that would be a great opportunity for him to show his stuff. However, it's entirely possible he only wants to be a "non-restricted" assistant and is not anxious to go the GA route. And since our last hire, we no longer have any coaching openings.

With spring training about to begin I'll use a baseball analogy to convey my feelings. In spring training all teams look like they could win the pennant. Only one will. Ditto for the Natty.

I feel a whole lot better about the 'potential' this staff holds vs. where we were after the Holiday Bowl. Huge upside in recruiting ability! No talent, no wins. Undoubtedly the hire of Williams is gonna do wonders for getting SC a look by top level talent that otherwise was lookin elsewhere until now. Not too mention, the staff is Actually Recruiting!!

I remember HCPC getting Shawn Cody as his first major recruit, and that set forth the ground work for the future. Cody was the key and Pete saw that and made sure Cody knew he was the "Guy" to start something special. I agree that a splash impact player brought in by the new coaches could very well be the start of a true rebuild where the top players want to come here and be the reason USC is a factor in the near future as the guys who turned things around.
