Disciples don't necessarily translate to great head coaches. Seems like the budget approach.

I played Legion ball in Orange County with Jason, he's a great guy, knows baseball and recruits very well. Or Andy Stankiewicz played against his when he was at St Paul in all 3 sports (Baseball, Football and Basketball). The guy is a great competitor, coach and recruiter. No more retreads. We need a person that isn't a Trojan but embraces what being a Trojan is about (Pete Carroll). Either guy would be a great hire.

    Fight On, Trojans

Tim Corbin would be a great hire. Brian O’Connor would be a great hire. Andrew Checketts would have been a very good hire. Too bad SC was unwilling to come to terms with him. Translation: they wouldn’t pay him. This is simply not a hire that says HH is interested in being in the top 20 every year. Yes, it is a budget hire.

Gawd, I hope they make a good hire. It's vitally important to so many Trojan fans that the baseball program be relevant again. It's a big part of the tradition at Southern Cal.

Still, both are second tier options. SC has to be willing to pay to get a quality coach. Some of the best are playing in Omaha this weekend and next week.

D1BASEBALL is already reporting that Loyola Marymount coach is the hire. Not sure why sc hasn't made the announcement. Hope that means they are in negotiations with Baylor Rodriguez or Duke or Michigan.

    Did Stankiewicz turn SC down?
What's the delay if it's Gill?

The Athletic Dept does not care about the baseball program. No offense to Gill, But this is just another mediocre hire that will lead to the same 500 record and left out of the NCAA. This is why most of the other PAC 12 schools kick our ass in baseball.

While Gill is not a "name" coach, he is not mediocre, he's a good coach. SC didn't hire some assistant or a Kreuter type. Gill has 11 years experience at a private school. That said, it's on SC to put some money into baseball. Dedeaux Field needs a lot of upgrading to start. A state of the art scoreboard would be a good start. SEC school are plowing big $$$ into stadium renovations, and we offer terrible food from a truck. UCLA has Dodger Dogs and their scoreboard is quite good. Further, SC Sports Information does not promote the team. Gill will do a good job evaluating talent, and that is key. He's a baseball guy. But, don't get me started on Swann, hope Dr. Folt shows him the door. Let's go Gill!

Back to Swann. His comments about college baseball are just comical. The MLB draft, roster size and scholarships are the same for all the schools, and all coaches are "familiar" with those challenges. The coach needs to be more than "familiar" with those challenges. Vandy, Stanford, Rice, Miami, TCU just to name a few are "familiar" with the challenges. One regional for SC since 2005 requires a bit more than being"familiar". What a bunch of excuses. SC will attract quality players if the coach is very good and the athletic department knowledge and support is great. Swann doesn't bring knowledge or support, that's a huge problem. SC baseball is a flagship sport that needs to be treated as such, it has not since Gillespie left. Gillespie came from a junior college to SC, not exactly the hire expected after Dedeaux retired, but it worked out well. Gill needs to bring in some excellent assistants and get to the area code games asap. It's all about the players, at the moment our roster needs a complete overhaul. Fight On!

Here’s the problem: Gill is said to be (or is) a great recruiter which means he has had talent but only has a .530 winning pct. Isn’t pointing out how great a recruiter Gill is actually an indictment of his coaching ability then?

It's Loyola Marymount, not USC or Stanford. He's sure a better hire than Chad Kreuter or Hubbs. Of course anyone who knows what a rosin bag is would be better than either of those two.

Exactly, it's LMU. But, LMU plays hard-nosed, solid baseball year after year. Players come to SC to play v UCLA, Stanford, OSU, for the exposure, more games v top teams every weekend. SC should be good every year. That's not been the case since 2005. In fact, most of the games have been difficult to watch. Our recruiting has been terrible. We have not been good at anything. Bottom of he league in pitching, fielding and hitting. That's why there is Coach Gill. Change the culture, more dirtbag and less prancing around the bases. No dancing in the dugout prior to game two v UCLA....then getting hammered in the first inning. The last 15 seasons, we didn't resemble SC at all. The current administration has no idea of how it was the days of Mark Prior and all. They only know, what they know and it's not championship baseball. Gill knows championship baseball, get the players and let's see what he can do.

I know it’s a loooooong shot but if Gill could add Mark Prior as our pitching coach/ assistant HC that would be an awesome hire! Anyways, anyone have names for possible assistant coaches??

Gill needs to get some of those players from Loyola that almost knocked off bruin to transfer. That pitcher Fernandeezes hurl it.
