Was Ronnie Lott a Cornerback or a Safety at USC? I always thought he played Safety but I was very young at the time.

If we are voting on DB's and Safeties, where is Troy Polamalu, Dennis Thurman?

And for that small of a list, I'm surprised Daylon McCutcheon didn't make the list. He was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award. Loved that guy.

These are just cornerbacks right now. Will move to safeties in a few days. You’re right right about McCutcheon. He was a miss. Will get him added.

Yeah, I mentioned this in another post. We'll circle back around to those positions. I had this planned where each All-Time position vote corresponded that same week with a State of the Trojans piece looking at that position on the current team.

I combined the tight ends and wide receivers for that story, and obviously there's no need to do a story on a non-existent fullback. Once we finish up those position group stories, we'll finish out the team.

I'm curious, was Dennis Thurman a safety or a cornerback? I have seen him listed as both over the years. I'm afraid he was before my time, so I unfortunately didn't get to see him play.

Thanks for all you do, I love this board. I don’t think he will win it but will Marcus be on the FB list?

Dennis Thurman was a saftey. I remember he played a few plays as WR too though that experiment didn’t last long.

Since he played both cornerback and safety, and was as good as he was, we listed him as a cornerback in that poll. If he hadn't been selected (spoiler: he was) he also would have been listed as a safety in the poll up now. It's cheating a little bit, because obviously he's better recognized as a safety. But that's a look into the thought process there.

I appreciate the thoughts about the poll and people taking the time to participate. This was an addition that Garry and I had talked about incorporating for a long time.

He played some games at Corner too, just like Joey Browner, but not having either one of them listed in the Safety Poll is a travesty.

Ronnie Lott was a Safety in HS, came to USC as a Safety and went to the 49ers as a Safety. The fact he was versatile enough to line up as a cornerback in the NFL, NOBODY thinks corner when they think of Ronnie Lott.

Okay, I'm convinced. They're both on the safety poll. But if Lott wins this one too, you have to explain to the fans why we're only putting 10 guys out on the field. They didn't seem to like it when USC tried that a bunch last year.

For some reason, I still do. Maybe it’s because of how good he was at CB. Yes, safety first (pun intended), but I still remember him as a great CB also.

Oh man Erik, I wasn’t trying to make you change them.
You know Ronnie is going to win safety hands down, so perhaps you could put the third place vote getter at CB?

I’ve been voting in all of them but just missed the Corner Poll for some reason

If you leave it alone and end up with 10 players on D, just call it the Hackett Exemption

Erik, will you be considering the All-Time Mr. Versatile Player as well? If so, then I nominate Reggie Bush, Jon Arnett, Adoreé Jackson, and Anthony Davis with which to start. I assume the All-Time special teams player is already in the works?

    Thanks

No, it wasn’t just you. I was getting bothered seeing the safety poll without Lott’s name on it. And I also figured there would be people who didn't realize he had already been on the cornerback poll.

The 49ers played Ronnie at CB initially. He played there the whole rookie season while Dwight Hicks and Carlton Williamson manned the safety slots (Eric Wright was the other rookie CB). After a couple seasons they moved him over to his optimal position as safety. So he did not "go to the 49ers as a safety"
