Jimbo Fischer was Haden's #1 candidate but he couldn't close the deal. Coming off the worst season at FSU in probably 50 years, he is headed to Texas A&M, which I would call less than a lateral move

Jack Del Rio had a good season last year, but now his seat is getting warmer as the Raiders look very lackluster

Chris Petersen looks good on paper with 22-4 over the last two years, but who have they beaten? Chris is 0-1 against Clay Helton with no top 10 wins

Kevin Sumlin... will struggle to find work at a power 5 program this offseason

James Franklin has Penn State much-improved. Probably the most impressive resume of any of these coaches over the last two years... except not as good as Helton's resume.

Cool. Now compare those guys to someone Haden did hire: Steve Sarkisian. I'd take any of the others.

I'm optimistic that Clay will be a good long-term hire. But Haden was a clown.

not a Haden defender. he was a terible AD. this is more about how coaching choices are unpredictable

I don't remember Jimbo ever being a serious candidate for the SC job. Which opening was that, 2013 or 2015?

2 of the other 4 guys on your list have been very successful. Both have won conference championships and Petersen has made the playoff. Washington hasn't sniffed anything like that since about 2000. And considering Sark was the coach we hired over them, I'm not sure how you can say we didn't screw that up.

OP, not sure how far back you want to go...

Mike Bellotti? Retired. Would have done well for us.
Dennis Erickson? Retired. Would have had us on sanctions.
Lou Holtz. Retired. Would have won a Natty for us.

Haden was a lazy, corrupt incompetent administrator, it's not that he wanted to hire or not hire somebody and what they are doing now. He had two chances to replace a coach, and he didn't have the veneer of a real coaching search. If Helton succeeds, it in spite of Haden not because of him.

All head coaching moves are crap shoots regardless of spin, hype, records, etc. Thats why the knee-jerk "fire so-and-so" is dumb. The question is "for whom?" Even then, with a proven winner, its still uncertain. All coaches know theyll be fired if they dont win, which is what the fans will want anyway. The next "best ever' is someone youve never even heard of yet.

I never heard of any interest in Fisher. One guy Haden had a lot of interest in bringing in was Brian Kelly, thankfully that never went anywhere.

Garry why do you say this? I thought Brian Kelly has done an excellent job with Notre Dame, he has taken them to a title game, and they looked pretty good against us a month ago? Granted, I love Clay and co. but Kelly seems like a good coach too.

Hmmmm.......so every time a coach is hired by an AD....(Mike Garrett ) it's because the AD got lucky.
I see. I guess being an AD is just a luck thing.

That reaction makes no sense. Logic just went out the window.

Look at how many QB's leave his program. There is minimal improvement at this position and most seem to regress. His sideline explosions at players and assistants are hugely embarrassing and most Domers I know what him gone yesterday.
