What an odd time to fire your hfc. A couple of weeks away from NSD. Unless they announce a new hfc in the next day.
Not sure that Kelly would be interested in the cal job. He needs a big benefactor that can help him buy the right players.

I think this door is wide open for Chip Kelly. May very well be the reason Cal fired Dykes right now, knowing they've got Kelly all but wrapped up.

Something must have happened recently for Cal to fire Dykes. Just like the coach at Minnesota, it may not have been about Cal's performance on the field, as bad as it was, but something to do with violation of school policies, differences of opinion, or he got caught looking for another job.

I highly doubt that Cal has the kind of money it would take to get Chip Kelly interested.

I just do not see Cal making this move at this time without a replacement locked in. It has to be Chip Kelly.

Leads one to believe they already know who they are going to hire. Heck, Chip Kelly already lives in the neighborhood. And I am sure they are tired of Dykes sniffing around every other decent coaching job that opens up.

After reading ADs statement, Chip Kelly wouldn't surprise me...

    from www.footballscoop.com:

I understand that the timing may not be ideal – it rarely is. We did not want to make this decision until we were ready and did so for the health of our football program and department. Our objective is long-term financial sustainability for our department. In order to do this, we understand that investing in football is critical. We believe that this change will reinvigorate the program, stimulate lagging ticket sales and renewals, and energize our donor base.

The move was first reported by Fox Sports columnist Bruce Feldman, who speculated that offensive coordinator Jake Spavital could be in the mix for the permanent job.
Spavital, hired last winter by Dykes, has been named the interim coach.
Justin Wilcox, a former Cal assistant who is currently the defensive coordinator at Wisconsin, is considered a likely candidate.
Speculation in the Bay Area naturally focused on Chip Kelly, who was fired by the 49ers last week. But two sources with knowledge of Cal’s plans dismissed Kelly as a potential candidate.
“This move wasn’t about getting Chip Kelly,” one source said. “This was about getting the donor base re-engaged.”
Dykes’ support within the university administration has waned, more because of his wandering eye and than because of the Bears’ poor performance on the field in 2016.

Cal's athletic department leads the country in its debt load - somewhere around $400 million. With that kind of debt, how can they bring in Kelly? But if they did, it would certainly create some interesting dynamics with Cal being in the same division as Oregon. How would the Duck faithful welcome back Mr. Chip should he return to Uncle Phi''s Field in Eugene?

Cal Director of Athletics Mike Williams made a statement that read in part, “After our bowl win last season, we showed our commitment to [Dykes] with a contract extension." Apparently Cal's administration, having made their commitment felt Dykes' name tied to so many other job openings over the past year, especially with regard to Baylor, told them that Dykes did not have a similar commitment to the program so bye-bye Sonny.

Kind of agree that with Dyke's name showing up so many other places that Cal thought it better to rid themselves of a guy not really wanting to be there.

Real bad timing for recruiting though. And add to that fact the problem with Standford being their arch rival and Cardinal don't need that many more players to get back to a possible
    double-digit winner next year.

Cal's football problems go well beyond the Head Coach. From an article on the school paper website, which also cites a broader Bloomberg series on the financial issues facing college athletics. Cal's big problem is the more than $400 million in debt it incurred renovating Memorial Stadium, the Athletic Department is paying $18 million a year just on this bill alone. Even with the revenue for tickets, TV, naming rights, apparel sales, alumni donations, etc, they will still run an $8 million annual budget deficit due to the stadium loan payments, and it only gets worst for them with time.

"Cal’s debt service last year cost nearly three times as much, the main reason why a department that generally balances its budget had such a massive deficit. Annual payments will be $18 million until 2032, when they jump to $26 million. They’ll peak at $37 million a year in 2039. The school plans to pay off the full sum by 2053, though the loan extends to 2112."

    Answer: 4 years.

Question: How many years does it take for Cal to forget how badly its football program sucked before Sonny Dykes showed up.

Dykes, by the way, was completely blindsided by this. As were his players, who found out via Twitter. Dykes just signed a contract extension last March, too, which means Cal will have to pay him $6 million to buy him out.

Funny how these public institutions are so cavalier about the public's money. I wonder who it is in Cal's administration who got their skirts ruffled over Dykes. Maybe they should be required to pay for that buyout themselves.

If Chip is the guy, keep in mind he will not be taking over a team that has been primed for success by Mike Bellotti. He would be taking over the Bears at one of their low points. He will have quite some ground to make up.
