I don’t claim to have all the answers, but when my contacts in the know consistently say that Lynn Swann is as culpable as anyone for the program’s recent demise and not fit for the position of AD, I listen. Think about it: aside from being the key person behind Helton’a five year contract extension, how else has Swanny exhibited leadership or competence (because extending Helton’a contract for another five years was just about the stupidest thing that he could do)?

He has never served in a position anywhere near that on the trajectory of an AD. He is horrible and learning in the job. I loved Swann when he played for SC and as a pro, but it’s time for him to go!

I said it when he was hired, he’s an empty suit.
    The last three USC AD’s
    Garrett - incompetent Bully
    Haden- Incompetent Narcissist
    Swann- incompetent incompetent

And anyone who wants to dispute my characterization of Garrett, take it up with the person who I got it from, who worked with him every day for three or four years

Agreed, but i would take Garrett over Haden and Swann in a heart beat.

I cannot see that Swann is doing anything at all. Not just football, but any of the sports.
I am sure we are pretty much leaderless and each sport is running itself.

Swann wasn't hired to do anything and that was by design. Nikias wanted someone to front the athletic department for the administration to run and Swann took the job knowing that full well. Haden didn't have that much more autonomy than Swann does. Mike Garrett did, which is unfortunately why we first got Haden and then Swann.

    He hasn’t that I know of.....yet.

Yes, he had no admin experience prior to being named AD, and extending Helton’s contract was a bad decision. Very bad one.

But Swann has a chance to make it right. Let’s see what he does after this season. Let’s see if he fires Helton and brings in a good HC.

That’d make me forget all about the contract extension.

Helton is Larry Coker redux even Stevie Wonder can see this. He won because he had superior talent in a weak division just like Coker. Neither won anything because of their coaching acumen. The longer Coker stayed the worse Miami became just like what’s currently going on at SC. Anybody who believes otherwise need their head and there eyes checked...

Bingo. I agree with you on every word.

Garrett may have been effective in some very limited ways, but he was a hot head and his attitude helped get us into the mess we’re in now. We also don’t need another Garrett redux. If we think the program is in trouble now, that would sink us for years to come.

I’m a pretty optimistic person, but I really admire your optimism as it pertains to Swann.
I’ve researched and looked for evidence that he is doing a good job at leading ANY of USC’s sports programs. I found very little in the form of evidence If you discount the times he’s served as a smiling figurehead (which is no real form of leadership to begin with).
I think Swann was a horrible hire and he’s in way over his head. Marrying USC to another contract extension for an additional five years was a boneheaded move and the final nail to Swanny’s coffin (and this coming from me, a big Helton supporter until recently). Swann needs to pack his bags, IMHO.

I agree with all of this.

But if Swann fires Helton and brings in a good HC, I will forgive him.

I'll take BKU for $100 Pat. He "gets" USC.

Let the BKU era commence! At least he was a successful player. I would take a flyer on him if that were an option vs keeping Clay Pidgeon
