Great list Bear. I would add Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, Rosanne Cash ,Bonnie Raitt and Allison Krause.
But Emmylou is the Gold Standard. If the angels in heaven could sing, they would sound like Emmylou Harris.

Xtina is nails. Blows the other 3 out the water.

Beyonce, sure. Mariah and Xtina? Oh HELL no. The only other female singer in the similar range/octave as Mariah was Minnie Riperton.

A more sultry and mature version of Taylor is Miranda Lambert. She's another major talent who writes almost all of her own songs.

Beyoncé? BEYONCÉ? Oh geezus...my list of Debbies is better. Listen to Rose Royce sing Wish Upon a Star... then listen to Beyoncé. You’ll be embarrassed for listing her.

I'm just not cultured enough in music to adjudge this kind of stuff. I will say that it seems most pop songs (and exponentially true for female vocalists) are whining about relationships and similar high school-ish social dynamics -- definitely not interesting to me.

That said, Shakira is VERY interesting to me. I like her performances in both English and Spanish, acoustic or electric, audio or visual. Plus her singing is so good, I'll even watch her on mute.

I’ve seen her a few times ( Neil’s Bridge School Benefit) I just wasn’t impressed. Different strokes...

Marion Worth had a string of hits in the sixties but doesn't get much airplay today. "There'll Always Be Sadness" was one of her biggies.

Another favorite of mine is Julianne Regan whether she's performing as a solo artist or singing for various bands...
