Only 23 former Trojans on NFL rosters, gone are the days when Troy regularly had 40 to 50 men in the league.

Lack of development has hurt draftday. Too many undrafted free agents under Clay era

Alabama had 11 players cut, three placed on IR or non-football injury list, and five more opt to sit out the season. And still Alabama put 57 players on active 53-man rosters, including five on the Baltimore Ravens.

USC is fourth in the Pac-12 with 23 former players on active NFL rosters. Washington is first, with 28. Stanford is second, with 27. UCLA is third, with 25.

Oregon is actually well behind, with just 13 -- tied with Colorado.

Hopefully it's cyclical. I think you'll see Furd and the UClowns fall off real quick.

I have a question. I saw Xavier Grimble got signed to the Colts practice squad. I was under the impression that after a certain period of time, you were no longer eligible to be on a practice squad? Or is that a certain amount of time with a particular team?

Grimble was actually released from the practice squad yesterday, an illustration of how fast things can move with those things. I’m no NFL rules expert but found this on the practice squads and time served.

“n August 2014, eligibility was expanded by increasing the number of games in a season a player must be on the squad in order for that season to count as one of the player's three seasons of eligibility from three games to six games. Finally, each practice squad could include two players who have accrued too much playing time to be eligible for the squad under the previous rules, though these players may have no more than two accrued seasons in the league. Starting with the 2016 season, up to four veteran players were allowed to be on the practice squad.”

I love seeing that Malcolm Smith is still drawing a paycheck from the League. So much has happened since then it seems like a hundred years have passed since he was at USC. Fight On.

I remember in 1984, USC had 44 on NFL rosters.
Just a few years ago there were about 34.
The decline has been quite recent.

I guess Clay Matthews, Rhett Elison, and Ryan Kalil retired or were cut some time ago.

I missed Cameron Smith on this initially. He's on IR following heart surgery, so it isn't another active player, but it's another Trojan on an NFL roster.
