“Southern Cal”???

Haters. The jealous folks out here do that. They Hate the Trojans here in the South. I'm looking for any reason to rub a Natty in their Hillbilly zzz faces..

 

It kind of marks where you are from. Alums and fans say SC or USC; the guy from the Midwest says Southern Cal.

Similar to this is San Francisco. Californians call it San Francisco or The City, while the guy from the Midwest calls it Frisco.

It don't see the harm. By the way, I grew up in Orygun.

 

Southern Californians also call it Frisco--which drives Frisconians up the wall!

 

I don't mind "Southern Cal"; however, I prefer USC or, as I commonly call it 'SC.

 

For some reason, in the early days of the school, "SC" was preferred over "USC." This attitude is reflected in our theme song, "Fight on for old SC" and in "Mid Storied Lands," a paean to "the halls of old SC" that served as our alma mater from 1909 to 1924.

 

Irony. Just curious, are the players we get from the South also hillbillies?

 

Somewhere something like this was emphasized by SID and media outlets were encouraged not to use the 'Southern Cal' moniker. I'd have to look through some of the older media guides, but I do remember reading it. But like I posted earlier, everywhere east of the Rockies calls us Southern Cal.

Meh. When I was a senior, I told all my teachers at La Mirada HS that I was going to "Southern Cal." I've always liked that moniker ever since I heard it on the ABC telecasts for football games.

 

Except maybe Mora. He used it on purpose because he thought it was some sort of insult.

 

I like to use USC just to jam it in the collective craws of SEC country. Remember, SC successfully sued and won the exclusive right to be the only USC, forcing the Cocks to refer to themselves exclusively as...whatever it is they call themselves, I don't think anyone cares because they've been irrelevant basically forever.

But I do prefer the wordmark formed by Southern Cal in script. Can't think of another school that, spelled out, looks that as classy.

 

We’ve had this discussion on occasion in the past. I don’t have any problem with it, seems like a natural abbreviation to me.

But to each his own.

Didn't Southern Cal used to sell used cars.

 

I'd rather have some old threads resurrected than another one started about Jack Del Rio or some "guy I knew with inside information."

It sounds cool and always has. It's beaches, sunshine, surfing great looking ladies, etc.

"Northern Cal" not so much.

 

We're. USC. Always will be. Southern Cal is geography

 

Directional schools are only a bad thing in the south IMO.

A directional school in California is a major university by Alabama standards. Furthermore, USC and Southern Cal are our brands. People know you are talking about our school when you say one of those names.
