“Southern Cal”???

I am here in Dallas and everyone refers to us as “Southern Cal.” I frankly love the name but Mike Garret, the worst AD in the history of mankind - thought it made us look like a “directional” school. Have we gotten past that silliness?

 

They can refer to USC as Cotton Bowl Champions after tonight...Thank you very much ;)

 

A lot of people in the south refer to USC as Southern Cal, and South Carolina as USC.

 

I like Southern Cal. Born and raised in SoCal. There’s only 1 Southern Cal and it’s US.

 

I have no problem with Southern Cal...never have. I grew up with Keith Jackson calling us that. It was a badge of honor as far as I was concerned

 

I don’t remember him saying that. Frank Broyles yes but not KJ

But I also don’t remember which pool I left my leaf blower on, so..........

 

I have no issues with Southern Cal. It's a historical name used for us.

 

Also Lindsey Nelson always used Southern Cal, and he said it with with great respect.

 

Keith Jackson did say it, Tom Kelly even said it sometimes.

My dad had a "Southern Cal" sweatshirt at one time leftover from his days on the campus back in the 50's.

There certainly was a move to eradicate the use of that name during the 80's to recent times as USC Media Guides made the point expressly that the term should not be used in any way with the USC teams.

Of course, our old friend Lou Holtz, who was aware of the fact at the time he was at Notre Dame and at ESPN, made sure he used that reference whenever he could in a derisive manner so as to make sure everybody was clear on the fact that he had no respect for USC.
However, due to his repeated use, it seems like some ESPN'ers held on to the term and sparked it's current resurgance.

As Garry points out, looks like USC now doesn't care so much about the usage anymore.

 

USC bookstore used to sell "Southern Cal" shirts, to preserve the trademark that school owns. Don't know if they still do it or not.

 

The argument against was that we didn't want to be associated with Kal bezerkly

 

Having lived in D.C. for a decade, I was completely annoyed when people would say "oh, South Carolina..." upon seeing my ring. My response: "no, the REAL USC". Lol

 

So Cal if fine by me





Actually, SC is just fine if that's all the room ya' got.

 

So Cal. 3rd generation So Cal and I still refer to it as SoCal. Beat the bucks.

 

I could not care less what the south says. The REAL USC is in California.

 

Because Garrett made a stink about it, Cal-L.A. blogs refer to us as "Southern Cal" because they think it is a dig at us. That's why I refer to them as "Cal-L.A". Whatever. I get more worked up about Trojan "Nation" vs "Family". Uh-oh did I just start something else?

 

Doesn’t bother me at all. Fight on!!!!

 

Completely agree with you on this. Whenever someone says this, they are basically demonstrating they have no knowledge of anything SC.
