Has this phrase always been used and I’m just now noticing, or has it sprung up recently and is now annoyingly overused? Any of you hearing a lot of this?

Per the Googlibrary, it is the formal term used by game officials, and is in the rulebook, but announcers usually just used "first down marker" instead.

It’s not a widely used term but it’s been around for decades.

I agree. Hear it all the time now and it is annoying as hell for some reason. Tonight on MNF heard one of them say the “line”. Just say first down like we’ve been doing since the beginning of time

It's almost as good as "put his foot in the ground."

It’s like when they all started saying “bell cow.” All of a sudden a phrase like this pops up and they’re all using it ad nauseoum.

The most annoying trendy term both inside & outside sports is "the narrative".

I've always hated when I've heard announcers say "The New York Football Giants."

Ummmm - what? There haven't been New York Baseball Giants since 1958, so why the need for the distinction?

For me, the two most annoying and overused terms are EXPLOSIVE and ELECTRIC. Can't they come up with anything new?

And how many "one of the most underrated players" can there be?

Throw "Arm Talent" in there with terms that annoy me.

Also annoying is when announcers drop the word "injury" when describing why a player is unavailable. Instead of "he is still out with a knee injury," they'll say "he has a knee." Yeah, I know he has a knee. In fact, he has two!

Worst one, IMO is the “ well struck” comment on a golf shot. What kind of Appletini sipping Dooosh talks like that?

Not so fast my friend. What if it’s the Paralympics?

Lol! Good point. Although I'm sure the announcers at the Paralympics are just as inane as any other.

Aman, bra. It irritates the be-jebers out of me when someone gets hurt on their body and they say, “he has a hand, a leg, a head, an arm, like really? For the love of God, please explain!

At least it's not like hockey where they would say a hip, knee or ankle injury is a "lower body injury."

Lol. Everything out of Clays mouth is like listening to the worst music you can think of and on a long car ride where you are a back seat passenger.

In the porn industry, that's potentially a "season-ending injury."
