True freshman Evan Mobley was named to the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 Watch List on Wednesday. The award is given to college basketball’s most outstanding player.
Mobley was one of just four freshmen to make the watch list.
The 7-foot Mobley has helped guide the Trojans to a 6-2 record this season. He leads the team with 15 points and 8 rebounds per game. He also has 23 blocks — nearly half the team total — and is shooting 58.7% from the floor. Among Pac-12 players, Mobley is 11th in scoring, 3rd in rebounds, 3rd in field goal percentage and first in blocks. He leads all freshmen across the country in blocks per game and is 13th among all players.
Mobley scored at least 11 points in each of the first seven games of the season, but was held without a field goal attempt, and to just three points, in USC’s most recent win over Utah. He’ll have an opportunity to make a couple of big statements this week, as USC travels to Arizona for games against the Wildcats on Thursday and Sun Devils on Saturday.
Mobley was the nation’s No. 1 recruit in his class, making it the first time ever that the Trojans signed the top overall player in the country.
He continues his run of watch list teams, as he was named to several pre-season ones, including the Player of the Year Watch List, the
Naismith Trophy Watch List, the 2021 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award Watch List and the preseason Pac-12 All-Conference First Team.
