Daniels re-classifies to Class of 2018

In a move that had been rumored for weeks, Mater Dei QB JT Daniels announced via social media today that he would re-classify to the Class of 2018 in order to enroll at USC next fall.

Daniels was originally a Class of 2019 recruit when he gave a verbal commitment to the Trojans last summer, and this fall he led the Monarchs to a 15-0 record, a national championship, state championship and CIF-SS title. By the end of the season there were many putting the 2017 Monarchs as one of the best teams in southern California history, and Daniels was a big reason why. In addition to his football IQ and uncanny accuracy, JT added a running dimension to his game that helped Mater Dei reach new heights.

JT’s announcement should not be viewed as evidence that Sam Darnold is leaving for the NFL. Getting Daniels on campus early is a good thing for the Trojans whether Sam comes back or not, and it would actually be a further benefit to have JT learning from Sam for a year and then competing for an open spot in 2019 (unless Sam comes back for his senior year). If Sam does decide to leave for the NFL this year, JT would be here in the fall to compete with Matt Fink and Jack Sears.
