An early look: Scouting Stanford

*No. 13 Stanford, which posted a season-opening 31-10 home win over San Diego State last Friday (Aug. 31), went 9-5 in 2017 and fell to USC in the Pac-12 Championship Game.

*Stanford is led by eighth-year head coach David Shaw (the nephew of an ex-USC All-American defensive back). He is the winningest coach in Cardinal history (74 wins).

*Electric senior RB Bryce Love (18 tcb, 29 yds, 1.6 avg in 2018, plus 3 rec, 18 yds, 6.0 avg), a leading
contender for the 2018 Heisman Trophy, was a unanimous All-American last fall and won the Doak Walker
and Lombardi Awards when he ran for 2,118 yards (8.1 average) with 19 TDs. He was the 2017 Pac-12 Offensive
Player of the Year.

*Junior QB K.J. Costello (21-of-31, 67.7%, 332 yds, 4 TD, 1 int in 2018) returns after throwing for 1,573 yards and 14 TDs (with just 4 interceptions) last year. Both of his leading pass catchers are back also, in WR JJ Arcega-Whiteside (6 rec, 226 yds, 37.7 avg, 3 TD in 2018), who had 48 receptions for 781 yards and 9 TDs in 2017, and WR Trenton Irwin (5 rec, 31 yds, 6.2 avg in 2018, plus 1 PR, 10 yds, 10.0 avg), who added 43 grabs for 461 yards and 2 scores. Junior OG Nate Herbig won All-Pac-12 first team honors in 2017.

*Stanford’s defense is led by senior ILBs Bobby Okereke (3 tac, 2 for loss, 1 sack, 1 dfl in 2018), who had
96 tackles last year.

*Junior Jet Toner (3-of-3 PAT, 0-of-1 FG in 2018) hit 21 field goals in 2017
