Q&A with Isaiah Langley

by:GarryP03/29/16
by Garry Paskwietz USC cornerback Isaiah Langley appeared in 11 games last season as a true freshman and had 12 tackles and one pass deflection. Isaiah, who had a 3/1 GPA in his first semester as an economics major, is taking reps with the first unit this spring while Adoree' Jackson is participating in track. WeAreSC: Being able to get a taste of game action last season, how is that benefiting you now? “I’m not a rookie anymore. I know a lot more of what to do, what to expect. I’m ready for whatever comes my way. I’m able to understand my strengths and how an offense is trying to attack me, and knowing where my help is coming from. That’s big. We can’t take away everything so you play off your strengths, know where your weaknesses are, and go from there.” WeAreSC: What parts of your game on you looking to improve this spring? “Everything. It’s about being consistent. I think my strength is “off-man” coverage, that’s where I make my money, but I just want to become a more consistent player in all areas of my game. It’s about knowing your technique more than who you are going against, making sure you are in the right position. If you do that, you’ll be fine.” WeAreSC: What has your experience been like so far under Clancy Pendergast? “I think he’s doing a hell of a job. It feels like he has a lot to teach us about this defense and we have a lot to look forward to.” WeAreSC: With Adoree’ Jackson out for spring you are getting a lot of first team reps, how has that been? “It’s been huge for me. I get so much out of it and when Adoree’ comes back it will be a chance to compete even more. That’s the way it is here at USC, the best guys play.” WeAreSC: That first off-season in a college weight training program usually produces a lot of gains, how do you feel physically this spring compared to last season. “I’ve put on about 15 pounds since I got here and I think that’s huge. With my body type I think I can still add a little bit more so that’s what I want to do. I showed up last summer around 165 and put on five pounds right away, I’m at 180 right now.” WeAreSC: Talk about Ronnie Bradford and his coaching style. “He’s a teacher. He knows this defense really well so he knows how to put us in good positions based on our strengths and weaknesses.” WeAreSC: How do you like USC as a school so far? “It’s perfect. I love everything about USC. It’s everything I thought it would be and more.”
