New Coliseum Commission Proposal (12-13-07)

The Los Angeles Times (12-13-07) is reporting about the lease proposal we received from the Coliseum Commission. It is, what I would call, a disappointment. You never know exactly what the TIMES knows or who told them because they can't burn their contacts. They do state directly that, "The latest lease proposal reportedly neither cedes control of the stadium nor commits to structural improvements."

So, is the word "structural" important? Maybe the scoreboard, bathrooms and new food facilities are not structural, but are included in the proposal. We will have to wait and see. The TV news shows are reporting that USC will have a response on Monday.

The statement from USC says, "Our goal remains to secure a viable improvement plan for the Coliseum." Apparently, that's not part of the Commission's proposal.

The Daily News is reporting, "the Coliseum's agreed to USC's original request to give the university the right to keep an NFL team out of the Coliseum."

According to the Press Telegram, "The term sheet has been framed around the proposal that USC made in June, which covered myriad deal point - from concessions, rent and stadium capacity to naming rights, control and the NFL - and was rejected two months later.
The commission took many of the deal points it was satisfied with and included them in the document it will forward to USC.

One that is not is turning over control of the facility to USC. The school, in its proposal had limited the Coliseum Commission to five non-commercial events per year, provided they didn't conflict with any USC events."

I have a feeling that the Commission views this process as back-and-forth bargaining. If so, then on Monday, I expect us to ask for more than they proposed and the process to continue. I doubt we just turn them down flatly. But then, I never expected us to go public in the first place so anything is possible.
