Two days to go! Stories everywhere, but no games yet. YET!
Tuesday practice featured a tougher than need be hit by Rey on PT as 58 led with his helmet. This sort of thing, they say, will kill you eventually. It will certainly injure your own team mate. One needs to have enough common sense to be able to back off every so slightly when playing against their own team.

Rey felt bad about it immediately, Turner felt worse, and may miss the Idaho game.

Pat Haden was at practice with friends and said he’d come by and do the show one of these days. SC still has yet to lose here since he and JK broke into the Coli and spread Coach McKay’s ashes on the home sideline. Great story, which just happens to be true! Fight On!

Pinkard starts at CB. Cary will play a lot. Everyone figures to play a lot this weekend.

Ryan Kalil gets the start at center in Carolina, and nothing could be finer.

Powdrell goes on IR for the Packers. I know how they feel.

Adam Goodman making some noise as backup fullback, although I think I still like Jordan Campbell better. I am sure the coaches take that into consideration.

I hear OJ Mayo is going to wear #32. ‘Nuff said.

The first PC media lunch came and went with only minor displays of mock outrage at questions. Most came from a series put out by Simers. I like what TJ does, it’s almost always tongue in cheek and while it can be biting from time to time, it’s also almost always worthy of reading.

After Pete, Tim Floyd brought in some hoopsters. Taj and Dan Hackett and OJ all answered questions about their upcoming trip to Mazatlan, Mexico.

Starting center Spanos is out for a while. Torn triceps, which can be a long healing process. Byers moves over. Radovich moves in. Too many injuries, too soon, and not a lot of depth on the OL. Problems starting to develop.

McKnight goes through light drills but no hitting, then some hitting Wednesday and will play some, perhaps. Hershel in pads for the first time in a long time. No hitting, I wouldn’t look for him Saturday.

Moody going to Florida, Holland not going anywhere fast.

The Locke Saints at practice, with the Tustin Pop Warner team. I used to coach at St Cecilia’s down there, a feeder school for Mater Dei. Back in ‘84-85.

Speaking of which, Marshall opens at North Hollywood Friday night. Coach says they might be in for a long year, after two really good ones.

BKU starting DE form the Vikes. Ian Kennedy starting pitcher Saturday for the Yankees. Hope he does well and then the Yanks take him out and they get blown up by Tampa Bay.

The Wednesday show features our longest single interview, that with Dr. Art Bardner, leader of the TMB. 30 minutes, and we could have gone another 30, it was that good. We had to cut him off as nick Holt took over, and we could have done 30 with him too, but ran out of time. Keith Rivers was going to come on but we moved him to next week.

Pete was his usual affable self today in discussing the opener, Byers was scheduled but was a no show.

College football opens tonight. Can’t wait to get home after practice, and watch the Tivo’d stuff.

Hey we have a pick ‘em contest on our show, if you wanna get in….prizes of some sort….just pick winners of the games involving any Pac-10 team, any team on SC’s schedule and all top 25 teams playing each other (this week, for instance there is only one of those—Cal and Tenn.—there are 11 games this week, including the SC game. Email them to me at heritagehour@uscvideo.com
Before the games begin tonight.

Dodgers playing with us again. They got rid of Tomko, let’s hope that stiff Hendrickson is next. I met, as I may have mentioned, Ned Colletti last week at HH, but chickened out when faced with the reality of telling him what he ought to be thinking sometimes. One thing I am pretty sure of…when it comes to managing a bunch of young guys to a pennant, let’s bring in Dusty Baker, who is available and wants the job and should have it, and get rid of Grady. And Donnelly.

Nice sweep for the Angels, they look like a lock now. Rory Markas’ charmed life continues. Fight On, Rory.

Clippers play by play job is open. I hear good friend Paul Olden is applying. Matt Pinto was really, really good. I think he was the best basketball announcer in Southern California last year. Now he’s with Seattle. I was the radio play by play guy for the Clips from 84-89 whenever they were on TV I did radio as Ralph Lawler moved over to TV. That was 17 games the first year, 68 the last. Then the SC job opened up. Did you know the Clippers paid me a whopping $250 dollars per game to do NBA play by play in 1984 and 1985.

Some say that might have been too much!! But, really….

Have you seen the opening day piece we just finished on Trojan TV all access—usctrojans.com? It’s a retro on opening days in USC football history. I really had fun putting it together, and think you’ll like it.
