Petros Papadakis chat transcript
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:20:33 PM)
Hello everyone
OkieTrojanFan (May 10, 2008 4:20:42 PM)
Greetings.
ATrojanVictory (May 10, 2008 4:20:54 PM)
What's up Petros?
JoeTrojan (May 10, 2008 4:21:03 PM)
Petros, How's the Taverna? I've heard mixed rumores about the city trying to redevlop the area
JoeTrojan (May 10, 2008 4:21:15 PM)
sorry bout the typos
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:21:24 PM)
good morning
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:21:29 PM)
sorry we are late
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:21:41 PM)
k hope everyone didn't drop off
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:22:27 PM)
my father owns the building so he's considering things at his own leisure.
JoeTrojan (May 10, 2008 4:22:53 PM)
What do you hear in recruiting circles about the impact of Neuheisal
JoeTrojan (May 10, 2008 4:23:35 PM)
Also, Has Coach Chow given you good access...I always thought he liked you. He appreciated your caustic wit
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:26:28 PM)
I've always loved Norm Chow in many ways I always thought he was a bit too honest for big time coaching but he is the best the business has ever seen and he's earned the right to do whatever he wants. When he first took over at SC it was my first year broadcasting and he was not pleased with me. our relationship has grown considerably since then in a better direction. he won't leave ucla until he corrects their offensive woes.
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:27:21 PM)
Rick offers an enthusiasm and passion for recruiting and a tangible alternative to Pete Carroll in Los Angeles. Expect him to recruit well always.
ATrojanVictory (May 10, 2008 4:29:12 PM)
Petros, how do you feel about Sanchez getting the nod over Mustain? Do you think it was too early to name a starter?
Trips Right (May 10, 2008 4:30:18 PM)
Petros, I know you are very high on Stafon Johnson, does his style remind you of anyone either past or present?
JoeTrojan (May 10, 2008 4:30:35 PM)
Has Fox signed you up for the '08 Pac-10 season? How about our favorite ..Lindsay Soto!?
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:31:36 PM)
They wanted to name the starter so somebody went through the summer gaining confidence. they chose Sanchez because he's their guy and he has experience and no matter what anybody says those three starts are huge. there was never really much of a competition and this is one of those cases where quarterbacks have to look a little harder when choosing universities.
Trips Right (May 10, 2008 4:31:54 PM)
Petros, on another tangent, have you ever had the opportunity to geo-cache with Arbo? How about a fish fry?
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:32:49 PM)
he's too smooth to be Ricky Ervins, too tough to be Mazio Royster, I'm not sure. I'd like to see him get a few carries in a row early in the season and I'll have a better answer for you.
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:33:57 PM)
just about (regarding the contract, looking at it right now). I do not know anything about Lindsay's situation except she's a lovely lady and my apologies to her.
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:35:08 PM)
what is geo-cache? I've gotten the fish fry invitations on my e-mail, i love the term fish fry but i wasn't at the party.
dp (May 10, 2008 4:36:21 PM)
P: Does your little brother have any interest in SC?
FO4SC (May 10, 2008 4:37:33 PM)
Petros, it is no secret that you have a reputation as somewhat of a Trojan hater, and being an alum yourself, this causes many fellow Trojans to have resentment toward some of your comments. Can you briefly speak on this issue.
ATrojanVictory (May 10, 2008 4:37:59 PM)
Petros, kind of off topic, but I am glad you called Joe McDonnell out on that whole Cowan injury thing. What he said was classless and I am happy to see that someone recognized that and put him in his place.
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:38:54 PM)
I don't see how he couldn't but the other five members of the family have graduated and haven't been in school in a long time. We are just excited he's experiencing the attention of being recruiting by a couple schools. He's a very good student and a nice but eccentric kid. He's being looked at by Duke, Harvard, Stanford, Oregon State, Georgia Tech, places like that. And Harbor College.
Trips Right (May 10, 2008 4:41:40 PM)
P, do you see McKnight getting more opportunities in this offense in the slot or split out wide...maybe more so than Reggie was used in his junior year?
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:42:09 PM)
I really don't consider myself a hater. there are plenty of people in this town in the media already ignoring anything slightly negative. i choose to be a bit more provacative to paint a better picture for the viewers or listeners. as far as my time at USC and my history with the school, having grown up knowing nothing else, I'm pretty comfortable with my affection for the university. and so is the university, but I also understand the fans and alums that enjoy only focusing on the positive and uplifting.
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:44:12 PM)
I guess the statement struck a chord with me because I saw my brother carted off a couple times, I got carted off, I saw a lot of my teammates and opponents carted off. But I just try to avoid Joe nowadays. The sports talk radio world can be petty and odd but Joe has got his own show, he's been working for decades and I try my best to respect him.
USCnationalchamps1 (May 10, 2008 4:44:51 PM)
Petros, Ben Malcolmson's blog is so much better than Scott Wolf's. Do you see Scotty ever improving himself to the level of Ben's professionalism? It is amazing how quickly Ben has risen.
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:46:38 PM)
i dont think McKnight possesses the wide out skills that Reggie had. Or even Malaefou MacKenzie. Which doesn't mean it can't develop, they will use him all kinds of ways. they only thing McKnight is better than Reggie at, at any point in college, is zone running. he has good instincts inside for a young back.
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:47:04 PM)
Who is Ben Malcomson?
OkieTrojanFan (May 10, 2008 4:47:35 PM)
Who is Scott Wolfe?
ujr (May 10, 2008 4:48:22 PM)
Petros, my dad thinks your great.................btw he is a die hard bruin fan.
ujr (May 10, 2008 4:49:17 PM)
my question was. Do you feel you get more love from bruins than Trojans.
FO4SC (May 10, 2008 4:49:25 PM)
Petros, will you be announcing again at the basketball games next season?
USCnationalchamps1 (May 10, 2008 4:49:52 PM)
He is found on petecarroll.com. He provides video clips of practice, much much better practice updates, and more.
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:50:03 PM)
Scott Wolf works for the LA DAily News. he's been the beat writer for 11 years. Who does Ben Malcomson work for? Pete Carroll, right? The Daily Trojan is more objective than Ben Malcomson. I've met him, I think he's a great guy that does a great job, but I prefer to get my news from outside the university in the media.
Trips Right (May 10, 2008 4:50:41 PM)
Petros, Stonehenge? Your thoughts?
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:51:18 PM)
that's been happening more and more, ujr, as I go deeper calling games for the Pac 10. It's not like people remember me as a football great, I've sort of become the fat obnoxious football color analyst type of dude. Go Bruins.
USCnationalchamps1 (May 10, 2008 4:52:04 PM)
Wouldn't you rather get yuour news from someone who tells the truth? It was Scotty who said that Lendale failed a drug test before the draft and it cost him millions.
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:52:28 PM)
I'm not sure if I will be doing the basketball games. I hope so. Every year I say "no mas" and when the season comes around I want to do it again. All USC has to do is ask and I say "yes", every year.
ATrojanVictory (May 10, 2008 4:53:48 PM)
Petros, I can understand you not wanting to focus on only the positive when it comes to all things USC. It's your job to be objective. But Wolf takes blatant shots at the University and the sports programs through his blog. As an ex-player and an alum, how can you even let Wolf on your show? He is the bigest douche EVER (right there with Joe McDonnell).
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:53:58 PM)
You people are a little too close to the Trojan situation. Most people I run into regard me as a USC honk. People scream "Hey USC" when they see me sometimes. I'm pretty sure the USC people give me more love in my own experience. But Bruin fans have been nice and even affectionate.
29RB's (May 10, 2008 4:54:49 PM)
Being an alum of USC as well as San Pedro High School, I was angry that Scott Wolf also reported that Mario Danelo's death was a suicide. Scott Wolf is a hack.
ujr (May 10, 2008 4:55:37 PM)
I just got in the chat so I don't know if this has been asked. Which player(s) do of our incoming revruiting class do you think can make a impact this year.
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:55:55 PM)
No one has ever directly contradicted that story, even LenDale himself. Wolf takes risks and sometimes stuff like that happens. I always find myself interested in what he's working on, don't act like you're not either.
FO4SC (May 10, 2008 4:56:07 PM)
In speaking about the negative, specifically your apparent bias toward Patrick Turner, why did you choose to call him an "idiot" rather than address directly your feelings about him as a player?
Petros (May 10, 2008 4:57:44 PM)
Blake Ayles
USCnationalchamps1 (May 10, 2008 4:59:10 PM)
Oh, I'm definatley interested; I am interested in what's best for the players and that they are protected. Wolf should be replaced with Ben or someone else. Plus, I don't see the benefits of taking a "RISK" is prudent when it comes so someone's future. If he can't prove it then he shouldn't say it.
29RB's (May 10, 2008 4:59:24 PM)
Risks are one thing, but to report inacurate information is just plain wrong. My family knows the Danelo family and Wolf's asserttions that Mario comitted suicide were very hurtful to Joe and Emily.
USCnationalchamps1 (May 10, 2008 5:00:21 PM)
Scotty's "RISK" wasn't Scotty's risk. He risked Lendal's future.
Petros (May 10, 2008 5:00:41 PM)
If I called him a idiot it wasn't a personal attack. I get carried away from time to time, obviously. What I meant to convey is Patrick is the #2 underachiever big recruit, message board All American, in the Pete Carroll era. Distant second to Whitney Lewis. But in no way is he an idiot, he's a student athlete.

What up party people
badges (May 10, 2008 5:02:20 PM)
Hello Oke Trojan Fan
USCnationalchamps1 (May 10, 2008 5:02:22 PM)
You know what, what 29RB's brought up is more important. Can you see how Scotty did something horrible and should apologize to the family face to face and publicly?
jg61588 (May 10, 2008 5:02:30 PM)
Petros, what are your thoughts on the O-line for the coming year?
ujr (May 10, 2008 5:02:37 PM)
P, how many games will the Laker-Jazz series go?
Petros (May 10, 2008 5:03:29 PM)
regarding the Mario Danelo situation, being from San Pedro, I understand it's been a real hurtful tragedy that a lot of people are very sensitive about. I can't speak for Scott on that, the police have never really had a conclusive cause of death.
29RB's (May 10, 2008 5:03:53 PM)
On to football. Petros, in your opinion, who is the better overall back Stafon or C.J Gable? I saw them both play in high school and i thought that C.J was a better complete running back. Thoughts?
FO4SC (May 10, 2008 5:04:11 PM)
Do you think that Turner being an "underachiever" and not measuring up to other people's expectations is a fault of his or on the part of prognosticators and "experts" and their inability to predict the career of every player?
Petros (May 10, 2008 5:04:30 PM)
They have a good o-line coach and some degree of playing experience, each of them, great anchors in O'Down and Byers, but they will be playing with various line-up combinations until the Pac 10 season starts.
29RB's (May 10, 2008 5:04:54 PM)
Not true. The police report said it was accidental.
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:05:17 PM)
what's up guys, any good news?
OkieTrojanFan (May 10, 2008 5:05:29 PM)
Petros, for those of us that aren't in the media, there is a perception of guys like Scott Wolf, Joe McDonnell, and would also include you in this category, that the bigger issue is attention/controversy/discussion, and accuracy is lower on the list. Realize that you are in a profession that is driven by ratings/listners/viewers, but I think what is annoying for many of us is to see the entertainment value supersede accuracy and/or with little regard for the people involved.
wwmb (May 10, 2008 5:05:55 PM)
Man, am I late?
Petros (May 10, 2008 5:06:01 PM)
I like Stafon's speed and he has something special that I don't think we have fully seen. But C.J. Gable is a tough back and I love his approach. Situationally, I think it's great to have them both but they're both guys who would benefit greatly getting the bulk of the carries to really explore their depth of ability.
OkieTrojanFan (May 10, 2008 5:06:06 PM)
Greetings, badges
USCnationalchamps1 (May 10, 2008 5:06:24 PM)
Did you just say "police have nevedr really had a conclusive cause of death"? Are you even giving a remote excuse for SW' s statement? Just say it was a horrible thing on his part but you believed he learned from it.

SJ needs alot of carries for sure
yorks (May 10, 2008 5:07:22 PM)
Oke, Badges is something I use on another page... my bad. How have you been doing?
29RB's (May 10, 2008 5:07:50 PM)
So going into the season, would the RB rotation be 1. Stafon, 2. Gable, 3. McKnight, 4 ?
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:07:52 PM)
Petros your honesty and view is refreshing
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:08:12 PM)
Bradford getting alot of carries to
OkieTrojanFan (May 10, 2008 5:08:14 PM)
Good - was going to play golf today, but too rainy here - wife came up with yardwork instead - and you?
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:08:24 PM)
Bradford should take the power back duties
29RB's (May 10, 2008 5:08:52 PM)
I thought Bradford was going to play full back?
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:08:55 PM)
the dude just ran a 4.4 from what I read at his size that is NFL sh0t
webmasterbob (May 10, 2008 5:08:57 PM)
Got bounced out as soon as I came in. Prolly Petros hatin on me
Petros (May 10, 2008 5:09:00 PM)
That's a very thoughful question OkieTrojanfan. Radio and internet have different levels of responsibility than print and the things I say on TV. I don't report things on radio that I don't believe are true and I try my best to represent everything with both sides. Personally, my job is to give more opinion than news and, yes, entertainment is the name of the game. But I don't think I'm that mean-spirited.
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:09:03 PM)
Havili is full back
FO4SC (May 10, 2008 5:10:06 PM)
opinion vs. news.....a good distinction to make
webmasterbob (May 10, 2008 5:10:14 PM)
P, how is it I see your dad at practice a hell of a lot more often than I see you?
Petros (May 10, 2008 5:10:36 PM)
I don't know what they are going to do in the running back rotation. The one thing I know for sure is Marc Tyler will be the last in line. They better be comfortable with some guys having their feelings hurt, there has to be a ryhtym and reason to how they rotate.
29RB's (May 10, 2008 5:10:43 PM)
Webmasterbob is iN THE HOUSE!!
johnwinger (May 10, 2008 5:10:58 PM)
speaking of his dad, is the restaurant really closing?
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:11:05 PM)
Tyler probably still needs to get back into it after teh leg injury
Petros (May 10, 2008 5:11:11 PM)
I like Bradford, I like Broderick Green. They have way too many guys.
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:11:20 PM)
it seems like they take at least 2 years to get back to 100%
USCnationalchamps1 (May 10, 2008 5:11:38 PM)
It's reported by a reliable souce that Bradford will play some fullback in either the red zone or goal line situations. I can't remember which.
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:11:54 PM)
seniority usually is how Pete takes care of stuff, except in cases like McKnight
Petros (May 10, 2008 5:11:56 PM)
I have a radio show from 4 to 7, that's when they hold practice.
webmasterbob (May 10, 2008 5:12:18 PM)

Thanks, Petros. Appreciate the perspective and distinction.
webmasterbob (May 10, 2008 5:13:40 PM)

29RB's (May 10, 2008 5:14:05 PM)
Hazelton had a lot of drops last season. I can't wait to see what Damien Williams brings to the table.
johnwinger (May 10, 2008 5:14:28 PM)
good call on williams
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:14:37 PM)
I forgot about williams but, I think Hazelton is the best WR
Petros (May 10, 2008 5:14:48 PM)
With Stanley Havili on the team, they don't have room for another fullback to play. Some random package things are one thing, but actually playing fullback is another. Again, they have too many running backs and more than one guy is going to have his feelings hurt. TRying to please everybody only makes it worse.
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:14:53 PM)
it is not like he dropped passes like Turner or Ausberry
29RB's (May 10, 2008 5:15:33 PM)
You are right dogg91702.
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:15:38 PM)

OkieTrojanFan (May 10, 2008 5:16:18 PM)
MAY have done?
rocket0348 (May 10, 2008 5:16:19 PM)
Why has USC signed 10 2009 Commits in Feb '08, and then has since gone to sleep? Cal, Stanford, UCLA, AZ, etc. are all signing good players (within the last three months). And there are many four-star players who haven't been offered. Are they sleeping in the recruiting office? Is Brennan a good choice for Head of Recruiting?
jg61588 (May 10, 2008 5:16:26 PM)
Petros, I really enjoy your announcing at the basketball games. Do you know if you will be doing them next year yet?
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:16:27 PM)
Carswell looked really fast on the reverse direction at the huddle
webmasterbob (May 10, 2008 5:16:43 PM)

FO4SC (May 10, 2008 5:17:01 PM)
He doesn't know yet if he will be doing the b-ball games....if asked, he will likely say yes
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:17:02 PM)
Those are the kids that have their grades right and also clear cut best at their position
Petros (May 10, 2008 5:17:14 PM)
I've enjoyed doing the show and working with Matt and a much larger radio station. We even have billboards Im told. There are some things I miss about doing a cult radio show, sometimes I still put on 1540 and listen to Korean music and talk and commercials, but I love the fact that I work with good people and do a show that a lot of people listen to, I think. At least at work they say people are listening a lot but I cant understand the radio ratings system. but we do have a billboard, I'm told.
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:17:38 PM)
Now it is time for Pete to sort through the other kids like at CB, DL, OL and WR. Them kids will have to fight it out
rocket0348 (May 10, 2008 5:18:05 PM)
Petros, did you see my question on recruiting above?
jg61588 (May 10, 2008 5:18:18 PM)
FO4SC...thanks. I wasn't here for that
webmasterbob (May 10, 2008 5:18:31 PM)
They didn't even tell you whre its at so you can get a photo of yourself with it? My spidey senses tells me tey are pulling your leg.
Petros (May 10, 2008 5:18:37 PM)
They need to find, in the receiving corps, guys that are tough and make plays in every game. People that can be trusted on third down, I think Hazelton has shown the most but still none of them have been consisten up to this point.
webmasterbob (May 10, 2008 5:19:42 PM)
Williams will change that this year if he sees field, also think Vidal and Rojo step up. AND Please God ....Ausberry
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:19:45 PM)

Petros (May 10, 2008 5:23:01 PM)

webmasterbob (May 10, 2008 5:23:34 PM)
Just pass the ph # along to Garry...
nyconquest (May 10, 2008 5:23:47 PM)

dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:23:49 PM)
for 2009 Pete got Randall Carroll for cornerback and that kid can fly with good size
Petros (May 10, 2008 5:24:16 PM)
I havent seen her? After 31 years the belly dancers may as well be they souflaki. I dont make a lot of distinctions down there, I'm easily confused. I'm sure she's very nice though.

I have to beleive that most of the dropped passes last season was a combination of inexperience at WR PLUS, some sort of communication or route problem with Booty at QB. A lot of times last season, the balsl were thrown behind the receivers.
rocket0348 (May 10, 2008 5:24:53 PM)
Randall Carroll is 5' 10". Thaty is short. That list of CBs I provided above are very good. I think this (DBs) is our defensive defiency.
rocket0348 (May 10, 2008 5:25:03 PM)
But he is fast
webmasterbob (May 10, 2008 5:25:07 PM)
If you have seen her, you know which one I'm raving about.
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:25:21 PM)
most CB's arent that tall because tall guys don't have shifty hips
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:25:48 PM)
a tall CB with the shifty hips needed to be a good corner back is really rare
uscmom\ (May 10, 2008 5:25:52 PM)
Do you not want to answer about the Taverna or should I feel slighted
Petros (May 10, 2008 5:26:06 PM)
Hey, I expect people to step up but I don't think the receivers group, as a position, performed very well last year. And they have a big responsibility for that.
johnwinger (May 10, 2008 5:26:13 PM)
i asked that earlier too
webmasterbob (May 10, 2008 5:26:31 PM)
Taverna might be a touchy one. It is a huge bummer IMO
Petros (May 10, 2008 5:26:32 PM)
webmasterbob - thank you for the engagament message
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:27:00 PM)
that is what sets apart CB's and WR's, WR's just need to run ahead, CB's need to be able to turn around with out breaking stride from side to side
Petros (May 10, 2008 5:27:17 PM)
I answered the question about the Taverna earlier, please check the transcript. The restaurant opens at 5:00 tonight.
rocket0348 (May 10, 2008 5:27:33 PM)
I think our receiving corp is deep - that isnt USCs problem. Our problem is at long snapper, Center, and Cornerback.
webmasterbob (May 10, 2008 5:27:49 PM)
Your Welcome. NYConquest is in the same place as you. Right Mel?
rocket0348 (May 10, 2008 5:27:50 PM)
And maybe 1 deep at TE
dogg91702 (May 10, 2008 5:28:07 PM)
O'dowd will be there for the next 3 to 4 years
uscmom\ (May 10, 2008 5:28:12 PM)
Thanks I wasn't on at that time Petros (May 10, 2008 5:28:22 PM)
