Default Is Tom Hansen retiring?

http://uwfootball.blogspot.com/2008/...-retiring.html

Sooner or later he has to go and that would be a good thing.

Default Can it really get much worse?

Football games on Versus. Crummy basketball TV contract.

I am willing to take the chance that whomever replaces Hansen would have a little more vision about the marketing of our product.

"games on Versus"

Before those games were on The Versus networks, where would those games have been shown nationally? My understanding was that most of those games were games that would not have been shown nationally, but now are available to the entire country.

Was I wrong about that? Is Versus "taking" games that would have been shown by more recognizable networks?

OMG - you are taking opposite view from SW (the Versus conference hater).

Be honest Chris, do you think Pac-10 has better TV deal than SEC, Big-12 or Big East? Versus is worse than ESPNU or FSN

Here is Big East TV schedule (2007)

Pac-10 (2007)

Believe it or not, I do not run my opinions by Wolfie before expressing them.

I would not say that the Pac-10 has a better TV deal than those other conferences, but I would think a lot of that has to with the rabid nature of the fan bases of the schools in those markets.

Also, am I incorrect? I thought the Versus network was showing Pac-10 games that would not have been normally broadcast by other networks. Is that incorrect?

Default Hansen just insn't a big thinker

I have no problem with that, but you can't tell me that Hansen marketed our product correctly, especially with Basketball. You sell it and sell it hard. Look I'm in sales and the customers don't come to you no matter how good a product you have you have get in front of them to sell the product. this is no different.

Sure we got some national exposure in football on ABC, Versus and ESPN but we clearly had a lack of exposure in basketball. Why not be proactive and try to work a package deal for both somewhere.

Hansen is not proactive enough at thinking outside the box to market his product. Instead looking for new ways to increase the Pac-10's exposure he would rather hang on to old traditions. Heck, he had to dragged kicking and screaming into the BCS. I do blame him for the bowl tie-ins as again he is not aggressive enough at get HIS teams exposure in more nationally known bowls.

Simply stated does it hurt to ask? Does it hurt to try increase the exposure for th total package not just football? His comment about leaving the BCS if the set up a plus one is a clear example that he is afraid of change. I want someone in there that is willing to take the chance and fail then to continue to hold on to old traditions that we migh have outgrown.

You have to balance the fact that a lot of these guys (Administrators) are academic eliteists that have a underlying level of disdain for athletics and also assume that success in athletics and success in academics are mutually exclusive, even so much to believe in success in one actually detracts from the other, as if University success is a zero sum game.

USC, Notre Dame, Duke, North Carolina, Michigan, Texas etc prove this to be a fallacy.

Hansen falls into the catagory of which I describe. It may hard to determine how many "swirlies" Hansen had to suffer, but athletics is clearly not his priority.

Watch Hansen get the last laugh by signing a new 40 year deal with the Big Ten regarding the Rose Bowl on his way out the door.

That wouldn't surprise me in the least. I can't think of one aspect of Divisional excellence that Tom Hansen has either supported, created, or been a part of other than digging his heels in over the Rose Bowl. We have what are arguably the worst bowl tie-ins, lousy TV contracts, arguably the worst officiating, and no one to champion the Pac10 cause. Other conferences are making deals, pushing their agenda, and having tremendous success. A change HAS to take us in a better direction at least.

I can't stand Slive. I think he's scum but he has certainly accomplished a ton for the SEC.

In the end, aren't the networks in the business of making money?

You are thinking in terms of football only. Pac-10 has lots more to offer which could be leveraged (packaged) into a better combined TV deal than what we have. Just from a business perspective, I (and probably many Pac-10 fans as well) believe that Pac-10 sports' full TV / Bowl / Financial potential isn't being realized with Hansen. Pac-10 schools are located in major media markets (LA, SF, Phx, Seattle) and Hansen can't take advantage of that to negotiate a better deal.

What BE does so well is leveraging their basketball appeal to better football TV contracts. TH surely could use some business savvyness.

I am not a network exectutive and I will not pretend to be, but if a PAC-10 package had the potential to be more profitable than some of those of other conferences - isn't it logical that there would be one in place with a major network?

To be fair, you can't blame Hansen for the lousy bowl tie-ins. Bowls are about economic stimulation for the local community, and that's why you have 6-6 SEC teams going to better bowls than 8-4 teams from other conferences.

Shreveport doesn't give a rats ass about the best possible game being presented, it's all about how many rental cars you'll need, how many hotel rooms will you be occupying, and how many restaurants you'll be filling up. Same with Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, Memphis, Nashville, Atlanta, etc.

Everything else can be laid at Hansens feet. Any change would be welcome at this point.
