Someone correct me if Im wrong...
USC has won 69 games from 2002-2007...
... Hershal Dennis has played for USC for 6 seasons (or at least has had eligibility with USC for 6 years)...
Doesnt that make Hershel Dennis the "Winningest Player in College Football History"?
Unless...
Is there some player(s) that has Won more than 69 games in their career, in College Football history ??? ... some Oklahoma kid back in the Bud Wilkerson days?... one of Knute Rockne players maybe ?... an Alabama boy under Paul Bryant ? (Fielding Yost's Era at Michigan probably shouldnt qualify -- took place before 1920, the Dark Ages of College Football).

I would think so, found this article from a couple years ago
http://www.ktvb.com/xtra/misc/stories/ktvbn-dec2805-scott_slant.2086c46b.html
Boise State’s main man this year is offensive tackle Daryn Colledge, who will be starting a school record 51st consecutive game today. Rod Couch of Bronco Country.com is an ace researcher, and he’s come up with this nugget: with a win today, Colledge would become the winningest player in college football history among those who have started every game in his career. “In the last four years, Boise State has won 45 games and lost just 6. Only two other players in the history of college football that have started every game have won as many games, Tennessee placekicker Jeff Hall (1995-98) and Nebraska cornerback Ralph Brown (1996-99). Hall's Tennessee team was 45-5, while Brown's record as a starter was 45-7,” Couch points out.

they didn't play as many games per season back in the day and hershel has been around forever so i wouldn't be surprised if it was him.

.....never got out of Carroll's doghouse.
It was convenient and easy for Carroll to sign and use Justin Fargus for one year back in 2002. But now that he has such a wealth of talent at RB he only kept Dennis around because he had to. I hope that Dennis does gets to the next level and proves that he should have been in the rotation this past year.

I remember recently had 6 years of time on a winning team was Jason White with OU. I'd be surprised if they had 70 wins during that time.

If that report was true, then...
Lawrence Jackson is the Winningest Starter in College Football History!
correct me if Im wrong... once again...
Lo Jack has been a Starter for 4 year right?
He has 46 Wins as a Starter!
2007 - 10 (with the Rose Bowl left to play)
2006 - 11
2005 - 12
2004 - 13

Oklahoma had 67 Wins from 1999-2004 -- Jason White's 6-Year Career.
*Dennis/USC from 2002-2007 is at 69 Wins (not 70; edited).

Complete and utter bullshyte. PC didn't HAVE to do anything of the sort. Pete could have gotten rid of Hershel in 2004 and been justified in doing so. He didn't and Hershel took his opportunity and showed Coach that his faith in him was justified. he got his degree, and will get his masters from what I hear.
I too wish he would have gotten more opportunity this year, but Coach didn't even have to let him file for the 6th year, so saying PC HAD to keep him is just a bunch of crap. Just not true at all.

I don't think Jackson started all year as a freshman. Cody was sometimes put outside.

Was HD in Carroll's doghouse or was it a case of having better players at the position than HD?

I think Hershel Dennis is refering to ME and this thread!
http://wearesc.com/news/story.php?article=982
SC Reporter: There’s talk that you are one of the most decorated college football players to play the game. How many rings do you have?
Dennis: I’m going to pick up I believe my 11th college ring today. I got a Pac 10 ring and an Orange Bowl ring my freshman year. My sophomore year I got another Pac 10 ring, a Rose Bowl ring, and a National Championship ring. The following year we went back to the Orange Bowl and we got two more rings and another National Championship ring. And the most recent rings were the back to back Pac 10 rings and Rose Bowl rings. They say I’m the most winningest college player. Plus, I’ve got three rings in high school. That’s a lot.
I say Hershel Dennis is the Winningest* Player in College Football History.
Where/How can I get confirmation on this ?!??
Anyone know if the NCAA keeps track of this record ?
*most career Wins as a "member" of a team.

It's a slim chance but i hope he gets to play in the NFL. If not for some bad luck he would be playing on Sundays for sure.

Circumstances got in the way of Hershel being all he could be as a RB at USC. Part of those circumstances was Bush and White, the other part was two knee injuries. Hershel was the older statesman of the team last year. He was loved and respected by his teamates.
If he could have stayed healthy I think he would have played last year, but he bruised his knee in camp. He played great in spring practice last year, and in the spring game. He's still a young man with a lot of ability and more grace than almost anyone you would ever meet.
Pete Carroll doesn't have a doghouse. He doesn't operate that way.

how does knee and career threatening injuries equate to dog house?
PC has been totally on his side from the beginning. and thats proven by how hes suppored his players and given hershel opportunity to get his degree. PC has relationships with these players and their families. and if there is a family member who is close to the program, it was hershels mother. always a presence. and regarded as "family" by coaches and players alike. thats the atmosphere PC has brought.
the doghouse thing is waaay off base.

You can't say it with certainty at the moment, because of the looser rules that governed some of the older dynasties (i.e. Yost's players at Michigan, or the winning-streak Sooners, etc).
No one has sat down and done the very large amount of research it would require, and you can't say it with certainty.

Dallas Sartz? I know that Carson was Dallas' host on his visit. But did they play together?
Just checked! Dallas was here with Carson, as a Freshman.

In the days of Oklahoma's 47 game win streak I think they only played 9 games plus sometimes they went to a bowl--there weren't a gazillion bowls back then. I wouldn't be surprised if it was an 8 game schedule many decades ago. BTW--right after the domers beat Oklahoma they went on another winning streak.

.
2009 Season...
Josh Pinkard and Jeff Byers, each being granted a 6th year of eligibility, could become the Winningest Players in College Football History (unverified).
USC from 2008-2004 = 59 Wins
They need 11 to tie Dennis, and 12 to pass him.
